MY FAVOURITE FESTIVAL

I live in Assam, the state known as the land of blue hills and red river. It is a place that is known for many feasts and celebrations, which are set apart by music, dance, merriment, mirth, community sharing, and spiritual colouring. Among these, Bihu is the most important and prominent. It is my favourite festival. Bihu is commended by everybody regardless of caste, creed, and race. Assamese celebrate three types of Bihus in a year-Rongaali Bihu or Bohaag Bihu, Kati Bihu or Kongaali Bihu and Magh Bihu or Bhogaali Bihu.

The word 'Bihu' originates from the Sanskrit word 'Vishu'. The Bihus are intently connected with the farmer's life. It marks three particular stages in the development of paddy-the local crop of Assam. Bohaag Bihu marks the advent of planting time, the Kati Bihu is celebrated towards the completion of planting season while Magh Bihu symbolizes the culmination of hervesting period.

Rongaali Bihu is the most significant Bihu among all. It is celebrated in the month of Bohaag, the first month of the Assamese calendar. In this way, the celebration denotes the appearance of Assamese New year. Thus, it is characterized by lots of  happiness, exhilaration, music and dance. The celebration coincides with the arrival of spring season in the state. The nature is in its best form completely enhanced with blooms and blossoms. In this way, this Bihu is known as Rongaali Bihu or the festival of merriment.

Bohaag Bihu is celebrated over a time of seven days. The celebration starts with what is known as 'Goru Bihu' which alludes to the act of ritual bath of the cow and bulls. The second day of the Bihu is the most significant day. It is celebrated as the Assamese New Year's day. People welcome the day with music and dance. Elders are given 'Gamosa', a conventional Assamese hand-woven cotton towel. Young men and young girls attired in their conventional outfits, go from house to house singing Bihu songs.

Kati Bihu is celebrated on the last day of the month of Ahin. It is a one-day celebration which is portrayed by the lighting of earthen lamps close to the Tulsi plants and in the paddy fields invoking nature's blessings for the achievement of the harvest. There is no feasting or rejoicing unlike the other
two Bihus. Henceforth, this Bihu is known as Kongaali Bihu or the festival of "poor people."

Magh Bihu or Bhogaali Bihu is celebrated in January, immediately after the harvest. A community function is held in a transitory house known as Bhela ghar or Meji Ghar which is erected in the harvest field itself with bamboos and paddy-stubble. A stupendous community feast is held at night. Youngsters appreciate feasting, singing and dancing all through the entire night. Following day, people take holy bath just before dawn and burn the Meji Ghar and worship the God of fire. Thus, Magh Bihu is a festival of feasting. Hence, this Bihu is known as Bhogaali Bihu or the festival of Food.

Bihu celebration is an integral part of Assamese life and culture. Bihu geet comprise a significant part of Assam's rich legacy and literature. The uniqueness of Bihu festivities is that they are commended by everybody. The celebrations are genuine community celebrations and advance a sprit of adoration, fraternity and feeling of unity. This is the reason I like this festival. It is the obligation of the people to celebrate the national festival of the state in its actual traditional form.
