SUBSTANCE WRITING

Q. Give the substance of the following passage:

(a) The progress of a nation depends on the honesty, labour and achievements of her people. Social evils and the vices are the results of human weakness. They gradually destroy the wealth of a nation. These cannot be removed by laws. To attain national prosperity, individual morality is more important than man-made laws and instructions. In a nation, there may have a large number of educated people as well as sages and philosopher, but if its citizens are dishonest, idle and negligent of their respective duties then all are vain. The nation will be proved the poorest of all, however rich in resources. H.S.L.C. 2014

Answer: The progress and honour of a nation depends upon its honest and duty-conscious people. The social vices and evils can never be swept away by laws but by its honest, active and dutiful people.

(b)There are books which are really no books at all, and to read which is a mere waste of time; while there are others so bad that we cannot read them without great harm. It is no doubt good to be warned against temptations and dangers of life, but anything that familiarizes us with evil is in itself an evil. So also there are others which one can read without being the better of them. By useful literature, we do not mean only what will help a man in his business or profession. That is useful no doubt but by no means the highest use of books. The best books raise us into a region of selfless thought where the troubles and anxieties of the world are almost forgotten.     H.S.L.C. 2015

Answer: There are two kinds of books: bad books and good books. Bad books are temptations to evil thoughts which do great harms. On the other hand, good books raise the readers into a region of selfless thought and make them forget the troubles and anxieties of the world.

(c)   It is very difficult to get rid of bad habits. So, one should be very careful that one does not form bad habits during the early years of life. Idleness is one such bad habit. Every boy and girl should be diligent. They should avoid idleness like poison. Some of them love to remain in bed long after daybreak and get out of bed most unwillingly. Even after that they waste time over trifles and spend as little time as they can in reading. As a result, they cannot learn much as they should. What is worse, they become so accustomed to such a bad habit that they cannot shake it off – even with their greatest efforts. This bad habit then holds them hard in its coils like a large snake.        H.S.L.C. 2016

Answer: If once a bad habit is formed, it becomes very tough to get rid of it. Bad habit includes getting up late at daybreak, spend time in trifles, neglect one’s duty etc. To make our life a happy, secure and prosperous one we must form good habits from our early life.

(d) It is easy to acquire bad habits, such as eating too much food or eating too many sweets or drinking too much fluid of any kind or smoking. The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it and if we do not continue to do it, we feel unhappy. This is called the force of habit and the force of habit should be fought against. Things which may be very good when only done from time to time tend to become very harmful when done too often and too much. This applies even to such good things as work or rest. Some people form a habit of working too much and others of idling too much. The wise man always remembers that this is true about him and checks any bad habit. He says to himself, “I am now becoming idle” or “I smoke too much” and then adds, “I will get myself out of this bad habit at once.”  H.S.L.C. 2017

Answer: Habit is a second nature. If we a do a thing too often or so much then it become a habit. A habit is such a thing; if it is not continued then it makes us feel unhappy. The wise people always avoid forming any bad habit. If somehow they become addicted to any bad habit they can get out of it at once. We should form good habits from our childhood.

(e) Of all the amusement which can possibly be imagined for a hard-working man after his daily labour there is nothing like reading an entertaining book. It calls for no bodily exertion, of which he had enough. It relieves his home of its dullness. It transports him to a livelier and more interesting scene. While he enjoys there, he may forget the evils of the present moment. Nay, it accompanies him to his next day’s work and if the book is an interesting one, it gives him something to think of besides the drudgery of his everyday occupation. If I were to pray for a taste it would be a taste for reading. Give a man this taste and the means of gratifying it, you will find a happy man. You place him in contact with the best writers of every age recorded in history and then you will find him like a citizen of all nations and a contemporary of all ages.  H.S.L.C. 2018

Answer: Book reading is the best entertainment after hard work. It calls for no bodily exertion. It relieves us of daily dullness. Book reading gives us something to think of besides the drudgery of our everyday occupation.  Book reading turns us into a citizen of all nations and a contemporary of all ages.

(f)The work which Gandhi had taken up was not only the achievement of political freedom but also the establishment of a social order based on truth and non-violence, unity and peace, equality and universal brotherhood and maximum freedom for all. The unfinished part of his experiment was perhaps more difficult to achieve than the achievement of political freedom. In the political struggle against a foreign power all one could do was either join it or wish it success and give it their moral support. In establishing a social order of this pattern, there was a likely possibility of a conflict arising between groups and classes of our own people. Experience shows that man values his possessions even more than his life because in the former he sees the means for continuity and survival of his descendants even after his body is reduced to ashes. A new order cannot be established without changing the mind, for at some stage or the other the rich have to yield place to the poor to achieve a kind of egalitarian society.     H.S.L.C. 2019

Answer: Gandhi worked not only for political freedom but also for the establishment of a social order based on non-violence, unity, peace, equality and universal brotherhood. But later on, it was realised that this goal could not be achieved because a man gives more value to his possessions than to his life. So to bring about a change in society we should try to change the mentality of its people.

ESSAY WRITING

Punctuality (HSLC 2019)

SEBA ENGLISH GUIDE

There is a common proverb that-Time and tide wait for none. It is a universal truth that time is a thing that never learns to stop. It is flying all the time. Time once lost cannot be retrieved. It is so precious that no money can buy a passed time.

Everybody should be very mindful of the proper use of time because life is a collection of time. We should do the right things at the right moments. Students should make good use of time in reading and acquiring knowledge. Businessmen can use time in such a way that they can excel in their business. Success in any sphere of life depends on the proper use of time.

Idleness is said to be the killer of time. Those who spend their time in idleness must suffer in their lives. We should not waste the precious moments of life in idle conversation, reading bad books or doing things that have no good effects.

Human life is precious. The worth of life is counted on the deeds that one performs in life, and the great deeds are performed by them who take care of every moment in life. Time is flying fast. We must seize it before it flies away and bring it to our best use. In short, we all should maintain punctuality in life.

My Last Day at School (HSLC 2018)

SEBA GUIDE ENGLISH

It was 28th February 2021 that became my historic last day at my school. The result of our Test Examination had already been out and all the students who were going to appear in the H. S. L. C. Examination from the school were invited by the General Secretary of the school on 30th December to bid them farewell.

At 10 A. M., the Farewell-meeting was held over which the Principal of our school presided. Just before the start of the meeting a group photo of the students with the teachers was taken. The meeting started with a song in chorus. As the meeting progressed, I felt uneasy at the thought of leaving the school where I had been reading for ten years.

The General Secretary of the Students’ Union spoke out the purpose of the meeting. Some junior students of the school addressed to the meeting first. They expressed their best wishes to the examinees and requested to forgive their faults in dealing with us. Then our turn came. The first boy from our class stood up first. He expressed his gratitude to the teachers who enabled us to appear in the examination. Secondly, I stood up. At first, I had to stammer because my heart was paining with the thought of separation from my teachers and school-mates. I begged of my teachers to excuse us for our conscious and unconscious wrong dealings and finally, thanking the students for their grand arrangements to honour us by holding this meeting, I stopped my fare-welling speech.

At last, our respected Principal stood up and wished us to do well in the examination. She warned us to avoid unfair means in the examination. She also admonished us to be good citizens along with becoming good students in life. After the presidential address, the meeting came to an end.

After the meeting, we were entertained with sweet-meats. In this way, my last day at school was a day of mixed feeling-feeling of sadness and pleasure. I shall remember this day all my life.

Kaziranga National Park (HSLC 2015)

SEBA ENGLISH GUIDE

Kaziranga National Park, a site for world heritage is situated in the districts of Golaghat and Nagoan, Assam. Its land area is 430 square kilometre. The nearest city to Kaziranga is Jorhat, Tezpur. It is declared as a national park by the Indian Government in 1905. It is especially famous for one-horned rhinoceros. The park hosts two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros. The term ‘Kaziranga’ is derived from the Karbi word ‘kajir-a-rang’ which means ‘the village of the Kajir’.

According to a popular traditional belief, once the locality of Kaziranga was ruled by a Karbi woman named Kajir and after her name, the area ruled by her was called by Kaziranga.

Through the bed of Kaziranga two rivers- Diflu and Vengra and many streams have been flowing from east to west. Its soil is fertile done by the mud of the mighty Brahmaputra. Kaziranga is the habitat of many precious wild animals, birds and trees. Of the total area the 28 per cent is covered by a variety of trees, 66 per cent is grassland and 6 per cent is covered by marshy area.

Among its trees, there are Shal, Shishu, Cotton, Jamu, Ajar, Kabai, Sunaru, teak and many others. Among its animals, there are rhinoceros, buffalo, elephant, deer, monkey, porcupine, cats, jackal, leopard etc. The park is full of many kinds of birds among which mention may be made of cock, ducks, vulture, goose, wren, crow, pigeon, bulbul, parrot, kite, heron, and so on.

Kaziranga now has been facing a menace of poachers. Every year many rhinoceros have been poached by the poacher because of its horn. Many elephants are killed for their teeth. Another menace the park has been facing is the cutting of its trees and deforestation caused by the explosion of population. Every year many acres of land of the park have been deforested and occupied by the homeless people ignoring the law. In addition to these, the great flood has been doing great erosion to the park every year bedsides taking away the lives of many birds and animals.

The Kaziranga National Park is maintained by the Government by Assam. But in time to time, the Indian Government also renders financial assistance an suggestions for its conservation and development. For its maintenance, there is an especial forest force with modern facilities.

Kaziranga is now a world heritage and many tourists from other states and even from foreign countries come to Assam to enjoy the wild animals especially world famous one-horned rhinoceros and its natural beauty. To visit the entire Kaziranga there are departmental elephant, cars, boats etc. In Kohera there is an inn for the tourists. Every year the Assam Government has been earning a lot of royalties from the Kaziranga National Park.

Kaziranga is not a forest or park only but also a resource of bio-diversity. The people of Assam as well India are proud of it. We should protect this world heritage from the hand of the poachers, smugglers, and illegal intruders and to bring about this into reality the local people must cooperate with the government.

Physical Exercise

Benefits of Physical Exercise (HSLC 2018)

SEEBA GUIDE ENGLISH

Physical exercise refers to bodily movement or the use of the parts of our body to keep our body active and healthy. In other words, physical exercise is a course of activities followed regularly for a good health. Walking, cycling, swimming, running, playing etc. are some forms of good physical exercise.

There is a great value of exercise. It improves our health. It makes our body sound, strong and active. Physical exercise has a positive effect on both our body and mind. It is said, ‘Health is wealth.’ A sound mind in a sound body is a source of happiness. Those who neglect physical exercise become weak in mind and health. A man of weak health suffers in life. He is attacked by many diseases.

Many people refuse to take physical exercise and grow up to suffer a lot in life. Students need to be very cautious about their health. They should remember that time spent in exercise is never wasted. They should take part in games and sports.  Health is the source of all happiness and bliss. If we lose health, we lose precious wealth in life.

There are many types of exercise. But all forms of exercise are not suitable for all. Strong men can take almost all forms of exercise but the weak and the old cannot do so. Of all forms of exercises, regular walking up to at least three kilometres is considered to be a healthy exercise.

To keep our body and mind healthy, active, strong and fit there is no substitute to physical exercise.

Television

Television As a Source of Knowledge (HSLC 2016)

SEBA GUIDE ENGLISH

Introduction: Television is a modern invention of technology. It is the primary means of entertainment as well as the simplest means of communication. In television, we can see and enjoy events along with speeches that take place anywhere in the world.

Origin and Functions: Television was invented in 1925 by an English scientist named John Baird. There are two types of television as black- white and colouring.  It is a very powerful means of communication as it broadcasts news, cinemas, songs and many other branches of entertainments. It plays an important role in advertising. It plays a significant role in the formation of public opinion.

In some countries, governments have undertaken a new policy to spread education through television.  It is hoped that education spread through a television would make it possible for the young generation to face the complexity of today's world with a great deal of skill and enthusiasm.

Its Bad Effects: As almost all the inventions of science bear both good and bad sides, so does television. Many times, television shows fake news and rumours that bewilder its viewers.  Moreover, all the news is not necessarily unbiased. Many programmes are run on television, but all the programmes don’t suit everybody. A degree of caution should therefore be retained when enjoying the programmes. The students should watch shows that are geared to their age and mind. They should not use it as mere means of entertainment. in addition to these, too much watching of television is detrimental both to the eyes and mind.

Conclusion: Television is a necessary thing of the civilized world. But we should use it avoiding its bad effects.

My School Library (HSLC 2018)

SEBA ENGLISH GUIDE

Library is a room or building where books on various subjects are kept for study. A library is a necessary condition without which a school can never be a perfect school. Our school has owned a spacious library.

Our school library is adjacent to the Teachers’ Common Room. It is a big room with almost all the modern scientific facilities. A senior teacher of our school is in charge of the library. There are some hard and fast rules for managing our library.

There are more than twelve thousands books in our library. Besides school books, there are many books on different branches of human knowledge. The school authority provides news papers, magazines and journals for our study in the library. Books are issued for a period of fifteen days. Our library authority lends five books to the poor students at a time. I am a regular reader of our library. I spend my leisure hours in the library reading literary magazines.

Our library has been serving students since its establishment in 2010 and thus it has been exercising its roles in disseminating knowledge and wisdom. I am proud of my School Library.

Answer:

Title: The Clever Hare and the Foolish Lion

SEBA ENGLISH GUIDE

Once there was a lion in a forest. It was very ferocious and cruel and claimed to be the king of the beasts. It used to kill all other animals in large number to satiate his hunger. As a result, the number of other animals began to decrease day by day. It became a source of terror for all the animals. So one day all the animals held a meeting and decided that the animals would send one animal to the lion per day. The lion agreed to their proposal and ceased to kill animals randomly. From that day onward an animal began to be sent to the lion as the lion’s daily meal. Thus the days were passing on. But one day the turn came to a hare. The hare was very intelligent and shrewd. He made a plan to arrive at the appointed spot very late. On the other hand, the lion was waiting for the hare eagerly. At last, after too much late, the hare came to the lion as his prey. The lion made a roar and said to the hare, “Why are you too late?” The hare said, “I am late because in the same forest there is another lion that stood on my way and wanted to eat me.”

Hearing this, the lion became very angry and envious of the other lion. He said to the hare, “Show me the lion. Where is that?” The hare ushered the lion to a deep well. The lion stood on the brink of the well and saw its reflection in the water. Then the lion made a roar and jumped down to kill the other lion. As soon as the lion jumped down, it fell down the well and died pathetically.

Since then other animals of the forest got rid of the ferocious lion and lived ever after happily.

Q.6. Write a letter to the Editor of a local daily expressing your concern over the incidents of crime against women in Assam.          HSLC 2019

Guwahati -3

Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to express my concern over the incident of crime against women in India, especially in Assam.

It is daily news that women, girls and even the underage children are being sexually abused all over Assam off and on. It is also frequent news that some women are forced to take up the job of a prostitute to earn some money. Moreover, the girl child is sent to work either to some private households or to some industries. Every year many married women are compelled to commit suicide for being unable to bring dowry from their parents.

Against all these abuse and crime, I think, the general public should be conscious and women also are persuaded to become aware of their rights and stand up for them.

Through this esteem daily I draw the attention of the government as well as of the public, in general, to come forward with a strong movement against this crime.

Yours faithfully

Inconvenience caused by load-shedding.

 Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the authority concerned to the problem of frequent load-shedding in our locality.

Our locality is a premier place in the district. But I regret to say that frequent load-shedding has made our life miserable. Indiscriminate power-cuts over wide areas for hours together have become a regular feature nowadays. Houses, shops, factories - all reel under the staggering load-shedding. Students and teachers are the worst sufferers. It seems the local division of the Assam State Electricity Board (A.S.E.B) pays no attention to this burning problem.

I, therefore, through your esteem daily, urge the authority concerned to take some urgent steps to eradicate the problem.

Yours truly

Trees help to support man’s life by supplying the atmosphere with oxygen which is essential to life. The oxygen in the air is constantly being used up and turned into carbon-di-oxide which is the food that plants eat. The leaves of trees (in fact, of all green plants) absorb this carbon-di-oxide and with the help of sunlight break it down into carbon and oxygen. The carbon is used to make starch and the oxygen is released into the air, so replacing the oxygen used up by animals. But for the animals would die for lack of oxygen.

Starch and other carbon compounds made in the green leaves of trees (and other green plants too) serve as food for animals. The tiny green cells of plants are wonderful laboratories that produce all the starch in the world. But for this service done by plants, all animals would sooner or later die for lack of food.

Questions:

(i) What is the food that plants eat?

(ii) How do the green cells of plants serve the animals?

The fiercely independent people of Coorg are possibly of Greek or Arab descent. As one story goes, a part of Alexander’s army moved south along the coast and settled here when return became impractical. These people married among the locals and their culture is apparent in the martial traditions, marriage and religious rites, which are distinct from the Hindu mainstream. The great advantage of early rising is that one can start one’s work long before others. The early riser has done a large amount of hard work before other men have got out of bed. Early in the morning, the mind is fresh and no sound or noises disturb our attention. The work done at that time is generally well done. Also one finds time to take some exercise in the fresh morning air. Exercise supplies him with a good deal of energy that enables him to work until the evening. By beginning so early, he knows that he has plenty of time to do his work thoroughly. He needs not to have to hurry over any part of his work. He gets to sleep long before midnight. Over many days and months, Valli listened carefully to the conversation between her neighbour and people who regularly used the bus and she also asked a few discreet questions here and there. This way she picked up various small details about the bus journey. The town was six miles from her village. The fare was thirty paise one way - ‘which is almost nothing at all’, she heard one well-dressed man say, but to Valli, who scarcely saw that much money from one month to the next, it seemed a fortune. The trip to the town took forty-five minutes. On reaching town, if she stayed in her seat and paid another thirty paise, she could return home on the same bus. This meant that she could take the one o’clock afternoon bus, reach the town at one forty-five, and be back home by about two forty-five.

On and on Valli went her thoughts as she calculated and recalculated, panned and preplanned.

Questions:

(i) What did Valli find out about the bus journey? How did she find out these details?
