Horace Danby was a fifty-year-old unmarried man who was considered a
good and honest citizen. He ran a successful business making locks and lived a
comfortable life, though he suffered from hay fever in the summer.
However, Horace was not completely honest; he had a secret hobby of collecting rare
and expensive books. To fund this expensive hobby, he robbed one safe every
single year.
This year, he planned to rob Shotover
Grange. He studied the house for two weeks, learning about its rooms,
wiring, and even the dog, Sherry. When the family was away in London and
the servants went to the movies, Horace entered the house.
While trying to open the safe, his
hay fever was triggered by a bowl of flowers on the table, causing him to
sneeze. Suddenly, a young, pretty woman dressed in red appeared. She
acted with such confidence and authority that Horace believed she was the
mistress of the house. She told him she had forgotten the safe's combination
and needed her jewels for a party that night.
Eager to please her and avoid being
reported to the police, Horace opened the safe for her. In his hurry and
nervousness, he forgot to wear his gloves and left his fingerprints all
over the safe. Two days later, Horace was arrested. He then discovered the
bitter truth: the woman in red was actually a clever thief who had
tricked him. The real owner of the house was a sixty-year-old woman who called
Horace’s story "nonsense". Horace ended up as an assistant librarian
