Q: Define the terms:

(a) Nation

(b) Government

(c) Association

Answer: (a) Nation connotes the concept of people who are conscious of their historical and cultural background and who wish to perpetuate this background politically; i.e. within the framework of a state.

(b) The government is one element of the state It is the agency through which laws are made, enforced and those who violate laws are punished. it is the visible manifestation of state authority.

(c) An association is an organised group of people that seeks to achieve some specific objectives through joint efforts. An association has, therefore, three features:

1. Organization of the people.

2. Some common/specific objectives.

3. Joint efforts.



Q: Distinguish between State and Society.

Answer: Differences between state and Society:

STATE   

SOCIETY

1. Only after living in a society the men felt the need of the state.

Society came into existence prior to the State.

2. The membership of the State is compulsory.   

The membership of the Society is voluntary.

3. The State must have a fixed territory.   

Society requires no fixed territory.

4. Organization is necessary for the State.

The organization is not necessary for Society.

5. The State is concerned only with what man does externally.

The Society is concerned with external as well as internal acts of its members.



Q: Distinguish between State and Other Association

Answer: Distinguish between State and Other Association are:

 

STATE

ASSOCIATION

1. The membership of the state is compulsory and a citizen can not give up the membership of the state at his will.

Membership of the association is voluntary. A member can leave the association whenever he likes.

2. A man can remain a member of only one state at a time.

An individual can become a member of many associations at one and the same time.

3. State requires a fixed territory.

Associations do not require any territory.

4. The aim of the state is the general welfare of its members.

The association is formed for one or a few particular aims.

5. The state is a permanent institution.

The associations are temporary.

 

Q: Distinguish between State and Government.

Answer: Distinguish between State and Government are:

STATE

GOVERNMENT

1. The state is not included in the government.

The government is included in the state.

2. The state is abstract. It is not visible.

Government is concrete. It is the visible element of the state.

3. The state is permanent. It continues.

Government changes. 

4. Everywhere the state is the same, having four elements.

The governments are of various forms.

5. A man becomes a member of the state by birth. He can not leave it at his will.

A man may become a member of the government only if he likes.

Answer: Distinguish between State and Nation are:

STATE

NATION

1. Every state must have all the four essential elements - population, territory, government and Sovereignty.

The nation need not have all the elements.

2. For the state, a spirit of unity is not essential.

The members of a nation must have the spirit of unity,

3. Every state has fixed territory.

Nation has no territory.

4. A state is a political concept.

A nation is a cultural concept.

5. State must have sovereignty.

A nation need not have sovereignty.
