The Tale of Custard the Dragon

This is a funny/comical poem composed by Ogden Nash. It is written as a ballad. Belinda lives in a little white house with her four pets. They are Ink-little dark cat, Blink - a little dark mouse, Mustard-a little yellow dog and Custard-a little pet dragon. They have a red wagon. A pirate assaults them. Belinda cries for assistance. The dragon gobbles(eats) the pirate.

They frequently ridiculed Custard for his weakness. One day a pirate breaks into Belinda's home. He had guns in two hands. Ink, Blink and Mustard flee in dread and cover up. But, custard faces the pirate courageously and kills him. Belinda was particularly happy with Custard. She grasped him. The other pets also dance with satisfaction. But, not long after they were again boasting of their bravery. Belinda was again taken in by them. She showered all her consideration for Ink, Blink and Mustard and leaving Custard weeping for a decent safe cage.
