CHAPTER: RISE OF GANDHI AND THE FREEDOM MOVEMENT OF INDIA

Q: Where and when did Gandhi use his weapon of Satyagraha on an all-India level for the first time?

Answer: Gandhi had utilized the weapon of Satyagraha on a smaller scale during Champaran, Kheda and Ahmedabad disturbances. It was in the movement against the Rowlatt Act in April 1919 that he utilized the system of Satyagraha on an all-India level for the first time. The movement was propelled on sixth April, 1919 when a day of hartal was observed against the act. The possibility of Satyagraha soon grabbed the eye of the public and many freedom fighters started to pursue his new weapon of latent/passive opposition.

Q: Under what circumstances was the Quit India Movement launched? Do you consider the movement to be a milestone in India's struggle for independence? Give reasons in support of your answer.

Answer: The Quit India Movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi. In order to offer a shape to  Gandhi's perspective, Congress Working Committee met at Wardha in 1942 and passed the 'Quit India resolution'. It was acknowledged by the All India national Congress with some alterations when it met in Bombay on 7th and 8th August 1942. The conditions that compelled the revolt were:  

1. Disappointment of Cripps Mission 

2. Risk of Japanese attack of India. 

3. Reign of dread in East Bengal. 

4. The realisation that the British could no longer secure India. 


5. Display of prejudice during the evacuation.

Many people accept that Quit India Movement is a milestone in the historical backdrop of the freedom struggle in India. Despite the fact that the revolt flopped in its endeavour to compel the British out of India, nevertheless, it spread awareness and united people. The mass agitation succeeded with regards to arousing and encouraging the masses. Individuals from all classes joined this movement. The motto of 'Do or Die' turned into the call of the country. the fierce mass agitation shook the very foundation of British system in India.

Q: Why did the Congress ministers resign in 1939?
Answer: On the breaking of World War II, England pronounced India to be a part of the Allied Force and in this manner at war with Germany, without counselling the elected Congress leaders of the nation. Congress said India would not be a part of the war unless it was announced an independent country. In this way as an indication of dissent, the Congress ministers resigned on first November 1939, creating a political deadlock in the nation.
