1. Leave the traditional method: One interesting thing you must have noticed is that from class one we learned “অ-আ-ই-ঈ” as well as “ABCD”, and we learned to speak Bengali fluently before getting up to class one but still struggling to speak two lines of pure English at university. The number of people who struggle is not less! What is the use of studying English in school and college for twelve years? For most people, this academic study is of little use. So, you understand, we have to leave the traditional method today.

2. Emphasize Spoken English: In school, we are taught grammar step by step, there is a subject called English 2nd Paper which is based on the emphasis on grammar. I will not go into the argument that it will be useful to learn so many details of grammar, but I will say that it is not possible to become proficient in speaking just by learning grammar. When we go to learn any language, we read the grammar details and make it very complicated, but forget how we have learned the mother tongue!

The funny thing is that we Bangalis know English grammar much better than an American whose mother tongue is English! But naturally, the American man speaks English much better than us! Because learning a language through simple conversation is much more useful than knowing what a sentence is made of.

3. Learn every day: I have so many friends, every time at the beginning of the new year they all get together and fix some “new year’s resolution” with a serious face. The most common resolution is to learn English. It is unlikely that it will be dropped from the list in the next five years!

Everybody struggles with learning English for the first few days of the new year, then how their interest dies, in a few days! they forget the goal unknowingly! That is why learning never happens again. Give ten minutes a day instead of ten hours a day to learn, you will see the improvement in learning! There are all sorts of awesome apps on smartphones these days, if you make it a habit to take a look at them by reducing your time on Facebook in your spare time, you can go a long way, I can say with a guarantee!

4. Four aspects of language: There are four aspects of learning a language - reading, writing, listening and speaking. By reading books in school-college and writing in the exam book, our first two aspects are quite mastered, the other two aspects we have not matured yet! If you have foreign friends, you will see that they are talking in all sorts of strange accents, it seems as if they are uttering half of the words and the rest is left in the throat, and you start sweating to understand that!

We still have great objections to watching movies without subtitles; we have not yet mastered the art of listening and speaking English. To handle these two aspects, make it a habit to listen to English news every day, to practise speaking on your own. It is very difficult to learn a language unless the four aspects improve together.

5. Increase vocabulary: Learning new words is a painful process, but it is like that bitter medicine - the process does not look good but the results are very sweet! So, learn new words every day. The idea of ​​"learning ten times a day from a dictionary will teach so many thousands a year" is not a good idea, because the dictionary contains all the weird hard words that will kill your zeal! So one thing you can do is run Facebook, watch games - there are thousands of words to learn from different sources. Smartphones have all the nice dictionaries, that say both meaning and pronunciation.

6. How do children learn ?: We adults make a simple thing with a lot of twists and turn, with a lot of complex thinking, kids don't have that thought, they crawl and learn the easiest way! The question is, how do children learn a language? They must not have learned the language by looking up the grammar and dictionary. What do they do? They constantly learn little by little from the various materials around them. Your friend who reads in English medium speaks excellent English because everyone around him speaks English, his books are in English; he has learned the language slowly by listening and writing all the time.

7. Reduce shame! Open your mouth: The usual excuse for all of us is, "Let me learn a little more, then I'll start saying!"

We never start learning that 'a little more', we don't even start saying it. So leave the matter of shame. If you speak wrong English today, someone may laugh at you, but after two days no one will remember. If you want to speak English, you have to practice speaking, there is no alternative. If you have an objection to going in front of people, you can do one thing - stand in front of the mirror every day and say out loud in English what happened all day. It will stop a lot, you will not be able to find the word, but the habit will develop in you.

Accent works with a lot of inertia, this problem is only in the subcontinent, people in the rest of the world have no headaches with it! Not being able to speak in a fluent British accent has nothing to do with it, there is nothing to worry about. There is nothing more incomprehensible than the Chinese pronunciation of English, but with this pronunciation they are doing business all over the world, the strange pronunciation could not stop them anywhere. So what is stopping you? English is not poker, it is not a difficult thing, it is a very common language, and it is not a difficult thing to achieve fluency in English.

There is a saying that to become proficient in any job, you have to practise at least ten thousand hours for that job! You better spend an hour every day!
