Psychology (Brain science) is a wide field. The word Psychology originates from Aristotle's word 'psyche' (promise mind), which means mind and the word 'logos', which means the study of.
         psyche logos = psychology.
          mind the study of = the study of mind.

Psychology is defined as: "Psychology is the science of behaviour and mental processes."  (Feldman, 2005; Lahey, 2004; Santrock, 2008).

according to Feldman, Lahey and Santrock:

Behavior includes all of a person’s overt actions and reactions, which can be observed by others such as eating, talking, smiling, and working.
Mental processes refer to all the covert activities that other people cannot directly observe. Activities such as thinking, dreaming, feeling, and remembering are examples of mental processes.
 


Goals of Psychology


There are 4 goals of psychology. The goals of the science of psychology are to describe, understand, predict, and control behaviour and mental processes.

1. To describe: The initial step is to describe a watched behaviour or conduct. To describe, a psychologist would ask 'what's going on?', 'when it occurs?' and 'to whom it occurs?'

2. To Understand: The second objective is to discover 'for what reason is it occurring?' In other words, the psychologist is searching for a clarification for the watched or observed behaviour or mental procedures.

3. To Predict: When the reason for the watched conduct or behaviour and mental procedures is recognized, psychologists could predict what is probably going to occur if the circumstance continues as before. Expectation of the future behaviour should be possible dependent on past logical research of similar circumstances.


4. Control behavior and mental processes: Clinicians go beyond describing, clarifying and anticipating changes in behaviour and mental procedures. They attempt to control the behaviour and mental procedures by controlling elements that influence them. This objective is to change a bothersome/undesirable behaviour to an alluring one.
